TogglePlanning a trip to the UAE in 2026? There is a pretty great chance of your flight landing or taking off from Zayed International Airport. Catering to the needs of Abu Dhabi passengers, AUH is one of the busiest international airports in the Middle East. But this rush does not mean that things are not organised at the airport. From handling dozens of passenger and cargo flights each day to ensuring seamless shopping, dining and lounging experiences for all, this hub is expanding and prospering at the same time.
Last year, Abu Dhabi Airport noted an annual traffic exceeding 30 million for the first time. Thanks to Etihad’s ambitious route expansion and multiple other airlines serving the UAE capital simultaneously, Zayed International is seeing some serious momentum.
But from 28 February 2026, things started getting tenser across the UAE and the broader Middle East. The UAE airspace got partially closed and many flights did not fly in or out of Abu Dhabi. Many tourists got stranded and many residents abroad could not return home. But this crisis brought one good thing into our focus: UAE airports are capable of handling any sort of crisis. Despite limited flight operations and frequent delays and cancellations, Abu Dhabi Airport handled all things quite carefully and meticulously, making sure that all passengers had a pleasant experience.
Since things are almost back to normal in the UAE, you can start planning your trip soon. This is your detailed guide to Zayed International Airport, featuring lounges, restaurants and bars, shopping centres, AirPass for those not holding a boarding pass, shuttle bus from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, Salam Meet-and-Greet, and so much more. AUH is quite large, but this guide is going to simplify things for you. Let’s get started, then?

Traffic at Zayed International Airport: Some Numbers to Understand the Scale
Zayed International Airport handled 32.5 million passengers in 2025. This is a record number and AUH definitely has to thank Etihad and other airlines for it. The UAE’s national airline introduced flights to multiple destinations across the globe, such as Vietnam and the US. Passenger traffic in the fourth quarter of 2025 rose 13.8% year-on-year to 8.59 million, mainly because of improved connectivity and higher demand.
There are plans to increase the capacity of the airport further. Some may say that the tourism appeal of Abu Dhabi has reduced because of the Middle East crisis and things are not expected to get back to normal anytime soon. But this is not the right picture to look at. Hotels, restaurants, theme parks and shopping malls in Abu Dhabi are operating as usual. Many interesting offers and promotions are also popping up. Basically, there is no reason for you to cancel your trip to Abu Dhabi.
Etihad Flights to and from Abu Dhabi
Latest flight schedule

Etihad is currently operating a limited commercial flight schedule between Abu Dhabi and a number of key destinations. Flight status is available here:https://t.co/GD92B7rrrz

Zayed International (AUH) acts as the home base of Etihad, the UAE’s national carrier. The airline connects Abu Dhabi to more than 80-100 destinations across the globe, including major hubs in India, the US, the UK, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and some European destinations. You can get your bookings sorted on etihad.com or the Etihad app. There are also plenty of travel agents in the UAE, capable of managing your bookings for you.
Because of the Middle East crisis, Etihad had to temporarily suspend many of its flights. But things are gradually getting back to normal as the airline is resuming operations on many routes. Still, it does not hurt to be a little careful. Therefore, check your Etihad flight status regularly and unless you have a confirmed booking on the limited flights in operation or the airline has informed you directly, do not leave for the airport.
If someone is telling you that the UAE has lost its tourism appeal, please inform them about Etihad’s continued expansion. The airline has announced flights to Kabul, Dhaka, Lagos and Charlotte, besides the aggressive expansion of routes seen last year. Upon direct bookings, you can get best-value fares, flexible payment options, and better control over Etihad Guest Miles. But it depends on you entirely. Zayed International Airport continues as the primary hub of Etihad, besides other regional and international airlines. This is going to remain the same in the near future, too.
