Hand-Crafted Sushi, Theatrical Robata, and the Best Seat in the House for the Dubai Fountain

KATA Dubai Mall is an award-winning, homegrown Japanese restaurant occupying one of the most coveted addresses in the city, right on the Waterfront Promenade at The Dubai Mall, looking directly out onto the Dubai Fountain with the Burj Khalifa rising behind it. Opened in November 2022 under the AMAI Gourmet Restaurants Group, KATA was built by award-winning Chef Marwan Sardouk, who trained under culinary giants Alain Ducasse and Heinz Beck before bringing his own contemporary vision to Dubai, now executed daily by Executive Chef Ricardo Bojador. The restaurant holds a 4.8 rating on Restaurant Guru across more than 1,200 reviews and a 4.7 on Google, and was set to expand with a second venue in Jumeirah, a clear sign of how quickly KATA has become one of Downtown Dubai’s most in-demand dining rooms.

Restaurant Features and Dining Experience

The interior at KATA is a deliberate visual statement, anchored by a large bespoke mural of a geisha hand-painted by renowned graffiti artist Wong Ting Fung, known as TF, blending over-the-top graphic energy with a refined 1970s retro aesthetic and a punk rock edge. Plush velvet seating, accents of red, and a lively sushi bar complete the indoor dining room, creating an atmosphere that feels distinctly different from the more minimalist Japanese restaurants found elsewhere in Dubai.

The real draw, however, is the outdoor terrace, which offers an unmatched front-row view of Dubai’s 902-foot fountain show, making KATA one of the very few restaurants in the city where guests can dine within metres of the choreographed water and light performances rather than watching from across the lake. Total seating capacity runs to around 120 guests across indoor and outdoor sections, and the restaurant operates as a genuine day-to-night concept, transitioning from a relaxed lunch spot to an elevated evening dining destination as the hours pass.

The menu reflects Chef Marwan’s contemporary approach to Japanese cuisine, built around premium ingredients, hand-crafted sushi, and an extensive robata selection, with vegetarian and vegan options well represented throughout. Signature dishes carry the restaurant’s theatrical flair, none more so than the Dancing Fountain roll, made with fried hamachi and drizzled in unagi sauce, and the Burj Khalifa roll, a towering creation of salmon, potato, and avocado built to match the dramatic skyline outside.

Other standout dishes consistently praised by guests include the Scottish salmon tataki, chicken katsu curry, salmon nigiri, and the mushroom truffle rice pot, which many diners single out as the standout dish on the entire menu. KATA’s Business Lunch offer, served daily from 11am to 3pm, is one of the best-value experiences in Downtown Dubai, a three-course set menu for AED 88 spanning seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. Desserts including crème brûlée are frequently mentioned by guests, alongside a strong matcha and coffee programme for those looking for a lighter close to the meal.

KATA’s beverage programme is built entirely around expertly mixed non-alcoholic offerings, with a curated list of creative mocktails designed to complement the bold, contemporary flavours of the food, alongside fresh juices, matcha, and specialty coffee. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, offers free Wi-Fi, and reservations can be made by phone or WhatsApp, with online booking strongly recommended for terrace seating, particularly around fountain show times in the evening.

Valet and mall parking are both available directly within Dubai Mall, and the restaurant’s proximity to Fashion Avenue and Bloomingdales makes it a natural stop for a shopping break or a pre-dinner browse. KATA is well suited for date nights, family dining, business lunches, and special occasions, with the combination of fountain views and refined Japanese cooking giving it broad appeal across very different kinds of visits.

KATA is open Monday to Thursday from 10am to 12am and Friday to Sunday from 10am to 1am. The Dubai Fountain performs directly in front of the terrace at regular intervals throughout the evening. Burj Khalifa is immediately adjacent. Souk Al Bahar is a 5-minute walk across the bridge. Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall Metro Station on the Red Line is a short walk through the mall’s air-conditioned walkway. Business Bay is approximately 5 minutes by car, and Dubai International Airport is around 20 minutes away.
